Note: This mini-documentary was developed for the History Channel, to fill a commercial break in an episode of Modern Marvels focused on ancient stadiums. It built on the surrounding programming by exploring how Cisco is empowering the stadium experience of the future.

FAN-tastic TECHNOLOGIES
There is nothing like the thrill and drama of watching your team battle it out at a live sporting event. And since the dawn of civilization mankind has harnessed the most cutting-edge technology available to bring fans closer to the action, and provide them a greater connection to their favorite players and the records of their heroic feats. This rich historical tradition continues today at stadiums across the globe where CISCO’s array of amazing sports entertainment technologies are bringing fans closer to the action and giving them unprecedented control over their experience.
This mini-doc explores the intersection of technology and the watching of live sports with the help of a tech-savvy Sports Fan. Our Fan is smart and casual, and he is in each arena to point out major leaps forward in live sports experience technology as they happen. He moves from one milestone to the next making his way, ultimately, to a luxury suite at one of the CISCO empowered stadiums, where the supreme live fan experience of the future is available today.
Note: The SPORTS FAN in the following script can be played by a single actor, or could be represented by a collection of like-minded sports fans from around the world. In addition to representing different sports and arenas, this approach could help communicate CISCO’s global reach.

SPORTS FAN: This is my ticket. |
|
|
SPORTS FAN: Bought it online and downloaded it to my phone. But guess what, that kiosk just read my ticket and pointed out that a better seat is available. |

SPORTS FAN: My experience just got upgraded and I haven’t even sat down yet. |
![]() |
SPORTS FAN: We’ve come a long way from long lines and paper stubs. |
| SPORTS FAN: And better seats just keep getting better. With this smart phone and Cisco’s local wireless network… |

|
SPORTS FAN: I can view the action from dozens of different cameras placed around the stadium.Sweet. |

SPORTS FAN: Sure, Binoculars were high tech in 20s and they could get you close enough to see your favorite player’s face, |

SPORTS FAN: In 1921, Pat Wheelz called the play-by-play for the Phillies vs the Pirates, the first radio broadcast of a live sporting event. |
![]() |
SPORTS FAN: And in 1939 moving images were added in the first TV broadcast of a live college football game. These major tech advances meant that you no longer had to be in the stadium to experience the game as it happened. In fact, a fan watching the game in their living room could get closer to the action than us fans in the stands. |

SPORTS FAN: But without TV we wouldn’t have the most important technological advance in sports, the instant replay. We first experienced it in 1955 watching Hockey Night on Canadian television, and I doubt there’s been a game without it since. |
![]() |
SPORTS FAN: Still, true sports fans missed the roar of the crowd, the frigid air, the tastes and smells of the game, the electricity that can only be felt at the game. |
![]() |
SPORTS FAN: So in 1985 the Jumbotron hit the scene, and brought the features of TV sports to the stadium crowd. Fans no longer had to become couch potatoes to get close-ups and instant replays. |
![]() |
SPORTS FAN: This? This is like having a Jumbotron in your lap. But unlike its mid-80’s cousin, I’m the one in control of what’s on the screen.Watching the game at the game is once again the ultimate in the experience of live sports. |
![]() |
SPORTS FAN: I can call up continuously updated player or team stats instantly. |
![]() |
SPORTS FAN: Or watch replays from anywhere in the stadium. |
|
SPORTS FAN: Sports Journalists can publish their stories as they happen sitting shoulder to shoulder with thousands of like-minded fans. |
|
|
SPORTS FAN: Dads and junior soccer coaches can buy collector’s items without cash. |
![]() |
SPORTS FAN: And in stadium lofts like this the future of the live sports experience is a reality today.I can watch my game and six others at the same time, and share it with a friend halfway around the world. And if that’s not enough, I can order all the chicken wings, hot dogs, and beer I want right through this phone. |

SPORTS FAN: It’s hard to imagine how it could get any better than this. But History is made every day. |
